Book Review: “The Courage to Start”

Happy Tuesday everyone! I’m still on fall break from school, so my day is going to be filled with a little gym time, some grocery and dinner-making time, and lots and lots of homework. Good times.

While I was off on my big Florida adventure this weekend, I had a little bit of time to do some reading. Originally I had planned to read for school, but it was vacation! So out went the school books, and in came my book for Jamie’s virtual book club“The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life” by John “The Penguin” Bingham.

Jamie decided to start a little online book club of all fitness (running, triathlon, etc) books, so I hopped right onboard! This is November’s book, so she’ll have a discussion up on her blog about it sometime next month. I’ll be sure to link to it when the time comes!

This book was really more of a book for people who want to start running. I actually read another one of Bingham’s books, “Marathoning for Mortals”, last year before I started my fitness journey!

While I still appreciated some of what Bingham had to say this time around, I really already knew everything. As such, this book was more of a motivational book, encouraging me to rediscover the joy of running, rather than an instructional book!

If you are new to the sport of running, or don’t consider yourself an “expert”, this book has some helpful tips and tricks. However, if you are well-versed in running lore and have been running for awhile, I encourage you to still read this book if nothing else than for inspiration! Everyone needs a little inspiration every once in awhile to remember why we started running in the first place.

I’m going to be sure to recommend this book to any newbies that I encounter along the way!

Do you have a favorite running or fitness book? Have those preferences changed over the years?

  1. Born to Run, by Chris McDougall. It’s the barefoot running gospel, and it converted me completely! I ran a marathon in toe-shoes in May, and I don’t think I would have been able to finish a marathon if not for the book.

    • 1. I am TOTALLY impressed that you ran a marathon – and in toe shoes no less!!
      2. I have read that book, and was intrigued. I guess I’m just semi-nervous to make the leap…

      • Well, if you get more interested in it, I would just say gradually ease into it. Or don’t even fully transition to just barefoot running! Minimalist shoes, or just using toe-shoes every once in a while, all of that will help your running overall.

Or at least that’s what the barefoot-convert thinks :-)

  2. Same here! Even though I enjoyed reading the book, I’m sure newbies or people who want to start running would glean more from this book than more experienced runners. Did you like his other book?
