September wrap-up

Happy Sunday folks! Hope your weekend has been stellar, like ours. We headed to the Beer Store and to Taco Punk for dinner Friday night, went to PUMP class and Whole Foods for lunch on Saturday, and then headed to the polo match. Remember the last one? Well this one was equally fun, and so.much.cooler! Love this fall weather.

I loved hanging out with the Pence ladies – we talked wedding, hashing out some details for Cullen and learning what she has planned! MC and I are itching to start picking our bridesmaids’ dresses now…

Don’t our mamas look chic? MC and I were going to go up in the balloon – then we saw the 20+ person line… we settled for lighting some lanterns instead. Once Cullen overcame her fear of fire, we were good to go!

First we lit it, and got ready to release it…

way too soon.

Take 2…

was still too soon.

Hey, we never said we were patient! Take number 3…

worked! Third time’s a charm.

It really was a great fall night, with such a magical ending. Rumor has it that Cullen wants to use these lanterns at her wedding next summer – I’m a fan…

So, let’s talk September goals. This month was supposed to be a month of service – pretty fitting since I just started graduate school for a job in the helping field!

All in all, I think it went pretty well. I have already learned a ton about serving people during my practicum – working with impoverished kids and their families has been incredibly eye-opening for me. I always thought that I was pretty empathetic and caring, but I have so.much.to.learn!

One of the big things that we talk about in our social work program is the idea of “cultural competence”. Basically, it is the idea that you have to be familiar with people of other cultures to be able to effectively work with them. Something that I’ve learned in the last month? I’m not that culturally competent! I haven’t been exposed to people of different races and sexual orientations and socioeconomic statuses and ethnicities nearly as much as some of my classmates have.

The most important thing for us when working with clients is simply understanding where they are coming from. I’ve tried to work on that as much as possible this past month. Every time I work with someone who is different than me, I become a little more comfortable for the next time! So overall, I feel good about my September goals. I made a slight bit of progress, but I also still have a lot of room for improvement.

Did you have any goals for September? How about goals for this fall in general?

  1. Oops, hit reply before I was done!!
I have one goal for October–run my first marathon!! I guess that’s something I’ve been working on for a while now, but, since it’s in October, it seems handy to use as my October goal.
Cool that you are doing social work. I’m impressed at how you recognize that you have a lot to learn–that alone will make you successful. We are always learning though, if we let ourselves.
I liked the lantern story you told–using pictures. Sweet! I probably would have taken at least as many tries as I am impatient too.
Found you on the SPA facebook page btw. :-)

    • A marathon is a GREAT goal to have!! I’ve only done a half, don’t know if a full will ever be in the cards for me…good luck though!!
