Gooooood morning peoples! It’s almost the weekend – deep breaths. We’ll make it!!
Did you know that I’m currently embarking on a year’s worth of resolutions? Rather than try to keep several resolutions for a whole year (because let’s be honest, those are never successful), I’m making a new set of resolutions each month. Much more manageable!
I decided that September is going to be all about service. Perfectly fitting, considering I am currently training to become a social worker! And even though I don’t want to be a social worker in the traditional sense (I want to work with people with longterm chronic illnesses, like cancer, instead of focusing on the poor like most social workers do), my practicum placement is stretching me in ways that I didn’t think possible.
I never considered myself an overly wealthy or privileged person. These two gave me a very solid, middle-class, happy childhood.
It has only been within the last month or so, learning about the kinds of poverty and oppression that a large portion of our country faces, that I have begun to truly appreciate my upbringing. Y’all, I was BLESSED. I have always known that (especially through my faith), but now I KNOW it.
These kiddos and families that we see down at the clinic? These people have faced unimaginable challenges, resource deficits, acts of discrimination – do I sound like a social worker yet? I don’t feel like one yet! I still feel WAY over my head. But I am learning.
And the most important thing that I have learned so far? Start with the client. They are the expert on their life. They have strengths. They bring something to the table. People, no matter how flawed, have potential! And with a little SERVICE (see what I did there?) we can help them achieve things, big or small.
And THAT is what service is all about.
